Raymond Van Neste writes about how looking back to 2020 and focussing on Global Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities)
showed how the world was very much in need at that time, in terms of a need for care and understanding. And then now, the question pops up: ‘have things improved’? Are we any closer to a more peaceful and united world’?
A comparison of the Global goals – Interaction
All of the Global Goals are interrelated in some way. Global Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities) relates to Global Goal 16: ‘Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions’. In Goal 16, there is a call for the reduction of violence, homicide, injustice and corruption in order to help people because when these exist it becomes impossible to be productive. Again, Goal 17: ‘Partnership for the Goals’, is a goal directed to all of the goals to see what might be needed to make progress. In Goal 17, it’s necessary to work for the cooperation and willingness of all countries around the world to work together. For example in 2020, it was necessary to work effectively to overcome COVID – 19.
A need for understanding and care
Again, when looking back to 2020, it became clear immediately, at that time, that many countries around the world were at a huge loss with not enough money or resources to save lives. It’s now that cooperation and a better understanding are needed because it effects the world as a whole. With regard to Global Goal 10, because of the lack of resources and aid the results of this are that the weakest, poorest and most vulnerable groups of people around the world have had to endure terrible suffering. With the inclusion of the COVID 19 pandemic, their was a consequence in terms of human lives.

And now?
Of course, there are many different ways of answering the questions: ‘what now’? or, ‘have things improved? This article concludes with the statements of the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, at the beginning of 2026, when he summed up the success of the Global Goals and if they would fulfill their aim by 2030? He Stated that some of the goals were on track but most were not. Nevertheless, hope remains for the future and for the work of the United Nations to point the way for Global peace and reduced suffering.
